Most illnesses and injuries
A monthly benefit (often a percentage of your income)
Short-term or long-term benefit periods (you choose)
Multiple claims while the policy is active (policy dependent)
Deferred period (how long you wait before it pays)
Benefit amount (how much you receive)
Benefit term (how long it pays for)
Definition of incapacity (for example, own occupation)
Because your ability to earn is often your biggest asset. If your income stops, the bills do not. This cover helps keep life stable while you get back on your feet.
Types of policy
• Short-term income protection (limited payout period)
• Long-term income protection (can pay for longer, depending on setup)

Income Protection is ideal if your income pays for the essentials, especially if you’re self-employed, the main earner, have a mortgage or major monthly commitments, have limited savings, or only receive basic sick pay. It helps replace part of your income so you can keep up with bills while you recover.
If you can’t work due to illness or injury, Income Protection pays a monthly benefit, typically around 60% to 70% of your income, after an agreed waiting (deferred) period. It can pay out until you return to work or reach the policy’s benefit limit/term, and you can usually claim more than once while the policy is active. Unlike critical illness cover, it pays a regular income rather than a one-off lump sum.

It varies based on the cover you choose (monthly benefit, how long it pays for, policy term, and the deferred period) and the type of premium (age-costed vs fixed, reviewable vs guaranteed). Your personal details also affect price, including age, smoker status, BMI, medical history, occupation and family history.
